As said previously Kusadasi is the mecca for Historic sites. Close by you will find the House of Virgin Mary where it is recorded in history that St John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus shortly after the death of Christ. Here she spent her last days in a small house called Meryemana Evi which was built for her on Mt Nightingale. It is now a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims alike. The house has received the official sanction by the Vatican and Christians observe a commemoration ceremony on 15th August every year. Also close by is the world famous Efes or Ephesus. Here was once the commercial center of the ancient world. The city itself was built in dedication to the Goddess Artemis and her temple was once one of the Seven Wonders of the World but was later destroyed by Alexander the Great. Ephesus was also the home of the Greek natural philosopher Heraclitus. The Ephesus International Festival is held here annually during the month of May.
