‘Castello di Montauto’ was built in 1080 on the ruins of a Byzantine tower in an area that has experienced and endured an intriguing and indelible history that truly lives up to the imaginations and speculations of the years of yore. Not far from the Castle, the famous Battle of Anghiari was fought between the Milanese and the Florentines. This battle was quoted by Dante and later depicted in a fresco by Leonardo da Vinci. The Castle itself has been the strategic point in various feuds. Part of the Castle was destroyed by fire 1503, only to be rebuilt. Saint Frances was a guest of the Castle for several years; during his stay he had a small chapel built, which remains today. The castle sits on a steep mountain (800 metres), covered with oak, larch and fir trees. It offers an amazing view of 3 regions of Italy: Tuscany, Umbria and Marche. The large entrance hall features a long antique table. Hunters gathered in this room after catching their game; the stuffed boar heads hanging in this room showcase this tradition. This room also features very old parchments and antiques. The main reception area features a huge fireplace, ancient tapestries, portraits, the original 19th century mosaic floors and ceilings 10 metres high. Off this room is a small living area with a TV, lounge area, a writing desk and views of the valley. The adjacent dining area also features a fireplace, ceilings 5 metres high, a large table, great for card games and reading. The Castle also offers the unique features of underground tunnels and secret rooms. The downstairs apartment has been recently restored. It is decorated with warm colors and mosaic-tiled floors. Ceilings ar 4 ½ metres high. It features a charming lounge area with a dining area and a large, open fireplace. A medieval style chandelier and various antiques add to the medieval charm of the decor. The small kitchen features a medium size, standup refrigerator/freezer, a 4 burner gas stove and electric oven. The apartment overlooks the chapel built by Saint Frances. The master bedroom features beautiful antique furniture, including a chaise lounge and mosaic floors throughout. The original 16th century stone still frames the doorways. The second bedroom is adjacent to the masterbedroom and features 3 single beds and an ensuite bathroom with a shower. The third room features 2 single beds that can be made into one double bed. The estate features 350 hectares of land and marked walking trails. There are 3 lakes for fishing (fresh water trout). There is also a small river. The neighboring property offers horseback riding and a swimming pool. There is a shop about a 1 km from the property where you can have lunch and dinner, but it is also a general store where you can purchase, cheese, breads, milk amongst other supplies. Arezzo is about 20 km away. Florence 100 km.
